Meet-cute writing prompts

Ah, the classic meet cute – that moment in a romance novel when the two main characters meet for the first time, often in cute or adorably awkward circumstances. Here are some ideas for how to bring your characters together for an irresistible first meeting.

1. Puppy Problems

Their dogs get overly enthusiastic at the park, entangling leashes and pulling their owners into an unexpected collision. As they try to separate the chaos, one of them realizes their dog has swiped the other’s treat pouch—leading to an awkward but necessary second meeting.

2. The Auction Standoff

They both bid aggressively on a rare item at a charity auction—one for sentimental reasons, the other hoping to resell it. When they drive the price sky-high, the auctioneer proposes they split ownership. Now, they have to figure out how to share something neither wants to give up.

3. Yoga Class Tumble

Character A loses balance mid-pose and knocks over Character B, sending water bottles and yoga mats flying. While scrambling to apologize, A makes it worse by stepping on B’s hand, setting off a chain of minor calamities that leave the entire class watching.

4. Tent Mix-Up

At a music festival, Character A stumbles into the wrong tent after a long night and falls asleep, only to wake up to an utterly confused Character B. With no immediate explanation and a tent full of B’s suspicious friends, A has to talk their way out of an awkward morning.

5. Beekeeping Dilemma

At a beekeeping workshop, Character A immediately regrets signing up when a bee lands on them. Frozen in panic, they’re saved by Character B, an experienced beekeeper who gently coaxes them through their fear. By the end of the session, A isn’t sure if it’s the bees or B making their heart race.

6. Comic-Con Connection

They meet in line at a convention, both dressed as characters from the same fandom. When a fan asks them to pose together, they realize their costumes are unintentionally perfect counterparts. As the day goes on, they keep running into each other—almost like the universe is setting them up.

7. Rivals in the Kitchen

Competing in a local baking contest, they meet on the winners’ podium—one smug in first place, the other begrudgingly holding second. As the event wraps up, they’re reluctantly paired for a promotional photo, forced to smile for the camera while still debating whose dessert truly deserved the top spot.

8. Meditation Mishap

At a silent retreat, they keep making eye contact across the room, struggling to keep a straight face. When one of them finally whispers a joke, the other can’t hold back their laughter. Banished from the retreat, they leave with amused glances—and the sense that the real connection wasn’t found in silence.

9. Book Club Debate

A heated discussion over a controversial novel divides the book club. Character A passionately defends it, while Character B tears it apart. The debate continues long after the meeting ends. When they realize they’re the last two left arguing, they both hesitate—neither quite ready to walk away.

10. A Perfect Fit

Working in a shoe store, Character A helps Character B try on a pair of boots, only to realize they’ve spent far too long adjusting the fit. When B returns the next day for a different style—despite claiming they rarely shop—A starts to suspect there’s more to it than just a preference for good footwear.
